Of Sorts for Provincials: American Weapons of the French & Indian War,
    by Jim Mullins
[Sorts]       This new book boldly displays the firearms, swords, and accouterments of the American provincial soldiers during the French and Indian War, 1754 – 1763. Unlike their British counterparts, the American provincials were issued a wide range of weapons from standard British Long Land muskets and carbines to civilian rifles and fowlers. These were often old, used, and in poor condition, guns that were described by British officers as "of sorts for Provincials."
Author Jim Mullins uses original examples of these unique weapons, as well as excavated pieces, are shown from public and private collections throughout the country. Printed in landscape format, the 11 x 8-1/2" format allows for beautiful wide color photos, on the fine coated paper. Long guns and swords are shown in wide views, up to 22" wide across-the-gutter. Close-up views of the unique maker's marks, proof marks, top views, and detail views show features rarely revealed. Showcased in high resolution, full color, all images were made by photographer and author Ryan R. Gale whose companion book, A Soldier-Like Way has become a favorite of our customers.
Original artifacts are included here from public and private collections throughout the United States, Britain, and Canada, including the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, The Royal Collection, Fort Ticonderoga, Fort Ligonier, Fort Pitt, Jummonville Glen, Fortress Louisbourg, and more. Examples are shown of every major pattern of infantry musket used from 1751-1768, as well as a variety of other items such as: swords, pistols, fusils, halberds, cartridge pouches, belly boxes, bayonets & scabbards, musket tools, ball molds, powder horns, uniforms, gaitors, shoes, buttons, buckles, sewing tools, camp equipment, axes, shovels, tent pegs, eating utensils, haversacks, canteens, coins, medical devices, gorgets, medals, sashes, and much more!
In addition to the above, this wonderful book includes the complete series of Grenadier paintings by Swiss painter David Morier, published for the first time in full color. This series of paintings, done in the early 1750s, depicts a Grenadier from every regiment of foot, from the 1st Guards, to the 49th Regiment. These paintings also depict images of daily camp life, campfollowers, and soldiers perfoming the manual of arms. Several other drawings and paintings are included from the Royal Collection, Canadian Archives, and private collections.

The 1776-1777 Northern Campaigns of the American War for Independence and Their Sequel: Contemporary Maps of Mostly German Origin,
by Thomas M. Barker and Paul R. Huey

Long awaited, this very important book is the first, full-scale, presentation in atlas form of the two, abortive British-German invasions of New York - events crucial to understanding the rebel American victory in the War for Independence. The bulk of the maps are from the German archives. The material has previously been little used by researchers in the United States due to linguistic and handwriting barriers. The volume includes transcriptions, translations, and detailed textual analysis of the naval and land operations of 1776 and 1777. It is written from a novel military-historical perspective, namely, British, German, loyalist, French Canadian, and First American. The attack of Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery on Québec City, the colonial assailants' repulse and withdrawal to the Province of New York and the Hudson River corridor, prior actions in the adjacent St. Lawrence-Richelieu river region of Canada, the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain, the forts at Crown Point and Ticonderoga, and the Battles of Bennington and Saratoga all receive detailed attention. The last section of the atlas deals with the less known, final phase of combat, in which the Britons, Germans, refugee tories, Québec militia, and American Indians kept the insurgents off balance by mounting numerous small-scale expeditions into New York.

1775: A Good Year for Revolution,
    by Kevin Phillips
In 1775, iconoclastic historian and bestselling author Kevin Phillips punctures the myth that 1776 was the watershed year of the American Revolution. He suggests that the great events and confrontations of 1775—Congress’s belligerent economic ultimatums to Britain, New England’s rage militaire, the exodus of British troops and expulsion of royal governors up and down the seaboard, and the new provincial congresses and hundreds of local committees that quickly reconstituted local authority in Patriot hands—achieved a sweeping Patriot control of territory and local government that Britain was never able to overcome. These each added to the Revolution’s essential momentum so when the British finally attacked in great strength the following year, they could not regain the control they had lost in 1775.
Analyzing the political climate, economic structures, and military preparations, as well as the roles of ethnicity, religion, and class, Phillips tackles the eighteenth century with the same skill and insights he has shown in analyzing contemporary politics and economics. The result is a dramatic narrative brimming with original insights. 1775 revolutionizes our understanding of America’s origins.

The War Man: The True Story of a Citizen-Soldier Who Fought from Quebec to Yorktown,
    by Robert A. Mayers

This is a rare and intimate portrait of New York soldier, John Allison. A farmer by trade, he first answered the call to arms in 1775, joining the Continental Army's 3rd New York Infantry. Allison was surrounded by like-minded volunteers, yet all were equally unprepared for campaigning. Despite the lack of training, equipment, and clothing, Allison and the rest of his company found themselves marching toward Quebec knee-deep in snow as part of the unsuccessful American invasion of Canada.

    [Warman]

So begins the remarkable story of the wartime experiences of a foot soldier of the American Revolution. Using letters, muster rolls, orderly books, service records, and oral family history, Robert A. Mayers reconstructs the campaign life of John Allison. What makes his life remarkable is that he participated in many key events across the colonies for the duration of the war. Allison fought at the gates of Montreal, the battle of Fort Montgomery on the Hudson--where most of his company was either killed or went missing--the decisive Sullivan-Clinton operation against the Iroquois, endured the bitter winter at Morristown, and helped man the frontline at the American victory at Yorktown. During Allison's eight-year military career, he survived numerous skirmishes and battles across the colonies, was promoted to the rank of corporal, and returned home a local hero.

    The First American Army,
    by Bruce Chadwick
Historian Chadwick's lively narrative of the Continental Army tells the tale of what was it was like to be an American soldier at the battles of Bunker Hill, Quebec, Saratoga, and Monmouth. He draws on the letters, diaries, journals, and memoirs of eight men and uses their experiences to give the reader a "bottom up" look at the war. The author first introduces you to fifer John Greenwood, a 15-year-old who was present at Bunker Hill and teenager Jeremiah Greenman, who marched to Quebec with then-hero Benedict Arnold in the fall of 1775. Later, the smallpox-ravaged survivors of that campaign that retreated to the Lake Champlain-Lake George area have their souls saved by Reverend Ammi Robbins and their bodies treated by Dr. Lewis Beebe.

    [FirstAmer]

Readers will find little academic analysis of the subjects, except for a few expansive chapter introductions. Those unfamiliar with the history of the revolutionary war may find themselves lost in the rapid shuffling between campaigns, battles and locations, but the stories of individual soldiers, doctors and ministers are strong enough to carry casual readers, as well as those more accustomed to more traditional histories. In fact, most readers have found they enjoy the look at the war from the enlisted men and civilian support point of view. Retails at $24.95 plus tax & shipping.
